SHELBY TOWNSHIP — If you’re into themed works of nature, it’s time to get excited about the event that rolls around only once every other year: the Shelby Garden Club’s flower show.
This year, the show will take place Thursday, July 13, through Saturday, July 15, at the Shelby Township Library — the usual staging grounds. Garden club members will create and showcase floral expressions centered around the theme “Made in Michigan.”
Ivy Schwartz, the club’s publicist, said she feels the theme ties into Michigan residents’ sense of pride in their state.
“We’re just trying to promote all the wonderful natural flora and vegetation we have here,” Schwartz said. “It takes a little bit of creativity to try to come up with something.”
Schwartz said she plans to bring a wall decoration. The base features two plywood cutouts in the shape of the Upper and Lower peninsulas, with succulents carefully rooted along the piece.
She said she started her project in the winter in order to determine which succulents would take root and not droop. After that, she said she had to gradually pitch the plywood pieces up from horizontal to vertical so that the roots would hold.
Linda Wojtowicz, a member of the flower show committee, said she plans to build her arrangement based on the colors of two books by an author from Clarkston.
“Past themes have been fairy tales, and one year we had storybooks,” Wojtowicz said. “The public always seems to enjoy the arrangements. It’s a nice attraction for the library and brings people into the library.”
Library Director Katie Ester said the show takes up the library’s whole atrium.
“We’re delighted to have them here, and we love being a part of any community civic group that helps us be a good community partner,” Ester said. “It’s always a beautiful gem. This year’s theme is ‘Made in Michigan,’ so there will be local flowers and native flora and fauna.”
She said the show coincidentally ties into a program the library hosted June 28 about how to landscape with native plants and create sustainable rain gardens. It also incorporates the “Build a Better World” theme of the library’s summer reading program, she said.
Library hours during the show are 9 a.m.-8 p.m. July 13 and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. July 14-15.
